Is CBD Safe? Cannabidiol Side Effects

We know that unlike THC, CBD does not mess with your mind. But is CBD safe? Here’s everything you have to know about the safety and side effects of CBD.

What Is CBD?

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of more than 85 active cannabinoids that can be found in plants such as cannabis. Unlike THC, the other major cannabinoid, CBD is non-psychoactive and won’t alter your senses. Cannabidiol makes up for up to 40% of the cannabis resin and has many potential medical benefits.

CBD can be used for conditions and diseases such as: pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, diabetes, stress, epilepsy, nausea, cigarette consumption or vomiting.

Is CBD Safe?

CBD has been studied and tested for its safety and current research shows CBD is safe and well tolerated in healthy individuals.

This review on the Safety and side effects of CBD concludes, “several studies suggest that CBD is non-toxic in humans“. The review goes on detailing that CBD does not induce changes on food intake, does not affect GI transit, does not affect psychological or psychomotor functions, and does not affect physiological parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate or body temperature.

There are some studies that suggest CBD can inhibit hepatic drug metabolism, alter in vitro cell viability and reduce fertilization capacity.

In a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial, researchers from King’s College attempted to evaluate the behavioral and physiological effects of CBD and THC. They found that taking 10mg of THC orally is associated with increased heart rate and sedation, while an oral dose of 600mg of CBD does not trigger the same side effects. The study concluded that there were no differences between the placebo and CBD, which was found to be safe and well tolerated.

When consuming marijuana for recreational purposes, you get both THC (which alters the mind), and CBD (which is non-psychotropic). These two cannabinoids interact with your Endocannabinoid System, but CBD actually helps take down the THC off of cannabinoid receptors, reducing its negative effects (memory impairment, paranoia, sleepiness).

If you’re on prescription medications or have underlying health conditions, talk to your health care specialist before starting with CBD. There is no risk of lethal overdosing or anything like that with CBD.

CBD Side Effects

CBD is safe for healthy individuals, but it has been reported to have some side effects in those suffering with certain conditions.

Higher doses of CBD oil can lower blood pressure, causing people to feel lightheaded or drowsy. While CBD is without a doubt a compound that does not alter the mind as it has wake-inducing properties, it is best to refrain from driving if you have consumed too much CBD oil. So, if you’re on blood pressure medication, talk to your doctor before starting with CBD.

In people suffering with Parkinson’s disease, CBD has been found to worsen tremor and muscle movement. However, there are some studies that suggest CBD is safe and well tolerated even in Parkinson’s sufferers. As this is a grey area, it’s recommended you consult your physician before using CBD.

Administering CBD may inhibit saliva secretion, causing a dry mouth, or cottonmouth. However, a glass of water can help you overcome this mild side effect of CBD.

In one study, CBD has been found to inhibit hepatic drug metabolism and reduce activity of p-glycoprotein. This means that CBD may interact with some liver drugs, as it acts on an enzyme in the liver.

Is CBD Safe During Pregnancy?

While there is no evidence to suggest that prenatal use of CBD is associated with a risk of serious conditions or birth defect, it would be better to avoid CBD while you are pregnant or nursing until there is more research in this field.

Having said that, CBD works to reduce nausea and vomiting, relieve morning sickness, soothe chronic pain and back aches, while also fighting depression.

Is CBD Safe for Pets?

Is it safe to give your pets CBD? In short, yes. Studies show CBD is safe and non-toxic for humans and animals alike. So, if your pet is a little aggressive or suffering with anxiety, you can throw it a few CBD treats.

CBD won’t harm your pets, won’t make them clumsier and won’t impair their judgment. CBD treats for pets are safe and may help improve their tolerance to vacuums or thunderstorms.

CBD is commonly used to treat anxiety in racy animals such as hamsters or rabbits, but also in birds. While CBD is safe for pets, it’s best you don’t administer Cannabidiol to your insects, as they don’t have an Endocannabinoid System.

Is CBD e-Liquid Safe?

CBD-based e-liquids are an increasingly popular category amongst vapers, but are they safe? Yes, CBD e-liquid is safe, as it won’t cause any side effects such as paranoia, munchies, red eyes or cottonmouth.

When starting with CBD e-liquids, make sure you go with a lower dosage to establish what works better for you, depending on your state of mind, physical condition or mood. Compared to taking CBD capsules, vaping CBD has a faster absorption, offering faster relief.

However, when buying CBD e-juice, make sure there’s no propylene glycol in the formula, as this is a thinning preservative that is not FDA-approved. PG can cause conditions such as kidney disorders, asthma or liver damage. Instead of PG, go with a CBD e-juice that contains vegetable glycerin.

CBD Dose

While CBD does not alter the mind, there are some limitations regarding its consumptions.

The study we cited in the CBD safety section suggests chronic use and high doses of up to 1,500 mg per day of CBD are well tolerated in humans.

When it comes to vaping, 200mg of CBD appears to be the maximum dose that can be vaporized efficiently, but it can depend on the vaporizer and heating efficiency.

Is CBD Legal?

Yes, CBD extracted from industrial hemp is completely legal in all 50 states in the USA. CBD is natural plant extract that is considered safe and it contains no THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis.

Bottom Line on CBD Safety

CBD is safe and virtually free of side effects. If you’re suffering from anxiety, pain and inflammation and want to improve your mood, CBD is a natural way to achieve just that.

Using CBD can soothe pain, reduce inflammation and uplift your mood, improving your overall wellbeing.
