Forskolin or CLA Safflower Oil? These are two popular choices when it comes to weight loss, but which one of them is better? Read more about the products and how they work in our Forskolin Vs. CLA Safflower Oil review.

What Is Forskolin?

Forskolin is a weight loss supplement that can boost metabolism, prevent additional weight gain, burn existing body fat and help build lean muscle mass.

Extracted from the root of the Coleus forskohlii plant, Forskolin has been used since ancient times in Southeast Asia to treat digestive problems, angina, respiratory conditions or allergies. But scientists discovered a few years ago that Forskolin is also a potent weight loss agent. This is mainly thanks to a previously unknown compound in Coleus forskohlii that can influence cAMP levels in the body.

How Does Forskolin Work?

The weight loss benefits of Forskolin are largely due to its ability to increase cAMP (Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate) levels in cells. Cyclic AMP has an important role in regulating cells and can trigger the release of various enzymes and processes that stimulate weight loss. Forskolin is an effective weight loss agent because it can activate cAMP on its own, without using neurotransmitters or hormones.

The cAMP in Forskolin works to activate enzymes that have a role in triggering lipolysis (fat burning), improving thyroid function, relaxing arteries and muscles, reducing allergy symptoms.

So, Forskolin increases cAMP levels, which in turn activates a body process called thermogenesis. This helps Forskolin boost metabolism and fat burning by increasing the body’s working temperature, but also prevents future fat formation.

cAMP also activates an enzyme called hormone sensitive lipase, which helps break down triglycerides and thus increase energy levels. Finally, another improvement in metabolic rate comes from the fact that cAMP promotes thyroid hormone release. Forskolin also increases lean muscle mass by improving free testosterone levels.

Forskolin Vs. CLA Safflower Oil: The Science

Let’s see what scientists have to say about Forskolin and CLA Safflower Oil.

Forskolin Study: One double blind placebo-controlled study wanted to investigate the effects of Forskolin on various body functions. In the test, 30 overweight and obese men were divided into two groups of 15. When the study ended, after 12 weeks, Forskolin was shown to positively affect body composition by considerably decreasing body fat percentage and fat mass. Additionally, Forskolin increased lean body mass and free testosterone levels, all in comparison to the placebo group. The study used a dosage of 10% Forskolin and 250mg twice per day.

CLA Safflower Oil Study: One study from 2009 wanted to investigate the effects of dietary CLA with Safflower Oil on body composition in obese women with type 2 diabetes. The randomized, double-blind, crossover study went one for 36 weeks and it involved 55 women. Supplementation with CLA was found to barely reduce body mass index and total adipose mass without affecting lean mass, while CLA had no effect on BMI or total adipose mass, but increased lean mass. While the study concluded that CLA and SAF have different effects on BMI and may be beneficial for weight loss, the actual results are unimpressive.
