CBD Benefits: What Are the Health Benefits of Cannabidiol?

CBD is a compound that can be found in cannabis or hemp. Along with THC, it is one of the 60 cannabinoids that can be found in marijuana. Cannabidiol is special because, unlike THC, it is not psychoactive, so it doesn’t make you high. This is why CBD is a strong treatment option for various diseases and conditions. Cannabidiol is still being researched to determine its full range of health benefits, but let’s see what has been discovered so far about this cannabinoid.

Cannabidiol activates cannabinoid receptors in the body by interacting with cells. These receptors then transmit various signals to other organs in the body, and thus triggering multiple physiological effects. Let’s explore the benefits of CBD (Cannabidiol).

CBD Soothes Inflammation and Relieves Pain

Many people choose CBD as a natural pain reliever. Research shows cannabinoids can have a role in how the body copes with pain by affecting pain pathways and inhibiting neuronal transmission.

A study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine revealed that CBD considerably suppresses neuropathic pain and chronic inflammatory without triggering a tolerance to analgesics in rodents. The study concluded that cannabinoids may be a new class of therapeutic agents in the treatment of chronic pain.

Another study from 2007 found that a combination of CBD and THC was successfully used in a buccal spray in order to treat neuropathic and multiple sclerosis-related pain.

CBD Has Antipsychotic Effects

Researchers show CBD contains antipsychotic properties and has a pharmacological profile that is similar to those of antipsychotic drugs. The study specifies human studies and laboratory rodents were used to demonstrate CBD can prevent psychotic-like symptoms associated with THC use. What’s more, Cannabidiol prevented human experimental psychosis and was effective in clinical trials for patients with schizophrenia. The paper states CBD has a remarkable safety profile and may be a future therapeutic option in psychosis and schizophrenia.

CBD Reduces Anxiety

CBD has been shown in studies involving healthy volunteers and animal models that in has an anxiolytic-like effect, reducing anxiety in patients suffering with social anxiety disorder. There is also evidence that Cannabidiol may be effective in treating obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

A double-blind placebo 2001 neuropsychopharmacology study aimed to compare the effects of a simulation public speaking test in healthy control patients and those suffering with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). The subjects were given CBD or a placebo 1.5 hours before the test. The test revealed that CBD pretreatment considerably reduced anxiety, discomfort in speech performance and cognitive impairment, but also significantly reduced alert in the anticipatory speech of the subjects.

In contrast, the placebo group presented higher anxiety, discomfort and cognitive impairment.

CBD Helps Fight Cancer

Scientific reports clearly show CBD interfere with cancer cell migration, tumor neovascularization, metastasization, adhesion and invasion with its anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects.

A study that was published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutic in 2006 found Cannabidiol is the most potent inhibitor of cancer cell growth, inhibiting the growth of different breast tumor cell lines.

In cancer treatment, CBD acts as a non-toxic compound, with studies showing a dose of 700mg/day for 6 weeks did not present overt toxicity in humans, demonstrating it can be used for prolonged treatment.

In 2011, researchers revealed CBD induces cell death of breast cancer cells. They also showed that CBD was capable of inducing cell death of both oestrogen receptor-positive and oestrogen receptor-negative breast cancer cells, but without using CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Research also shows CBD can be used to inhibit the invasion of colon and lung cancer, but also for leukemia.

CBD Relieves Nausea

Cannabis has a long history of use when it comes to relieving nausea and vomiting. Research has demonstrated through animal studies that out of more than 60 cannabinoids found in marijuana, CBD and THC can help eliminate nausea and vomiting. A 2012 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology showed that CBD has anti-emetic effects, preventing nausea and vomiting. The paper specified that it’s best to used Cannabidiol in low doses to suppress vomiting, as higher doses increase nausea or tend to have a lesser effect.

CBD May Treat Seizures and Other Neurological Disorders

Stanford University researchers conducted a survey in to explore the use of CBD rich cannabis in children with treatment-resistant epilepsy. The survey was then showed to parents who were part of a Facebook group created to share information about the use of CBD-rich cannabis to treat their child’s seizures. There were 19 responses in the group that met the criteria, which required a diagnosis of epilepsy and current use of CBD-enriched cannabis. The paper also states the average number of anti-epileptic drugs tried before CBD-enriched cannabis was 12. 16 out of the 19 parents then reported a reduction in their child’s seizure frequency while taking CBD-enriched cannabis. Out of the 16, 2 reported complete seizure freedom, 8 reported a reduction in seizure frequency of more than 80%, while six reported a reduction between 25% and 60%.

Among other beneficial effects of using this CBD-rich cannabis there were better mood, increased alertness and improved sleep, while the side effects were mild, including fatigue and drowsiness.

In 2014, researchers presented preliminary results of a study involving children with treatment-resistant epilepsies who were administered a purified 98 percent oil-based CBD. After 3 months of treatment, 39% of the 23 patients reported a reduction in seizures greater than 50%, while 32% of the patients reported a median reduction. These early results suggest CBD is a promising and generally well-tolerated treatment alternative for treatment-resistant epilepsy, especially in doses of up to 25mg/kilogram of body weight.

CBD Reduces Incidence of Diabetes

Cannabinoids were evaluated in a 2006 study to determine their effects on the incidence of diabetes in on-obese diabetic mice. The study revealed that CBD considerably reduced the incidence of diabetes, taking the figures from 86% in non-treated mice, to only 30% in CBD-treated mice. The CBD treatment also resulted in a considerable reduction of plasma levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, but also significantly reduced insulitis.

A 2013 study published in the American Journal of Medicine showed the impact of marijuana use on glucose, insulin and insulin resistance among adults in the USA. There were 4,657 adult men and women included in the study, with 579 of them being current marijuana users and 1,975 past users. Researchers discovered that current marijuana use was linked to a 16% lower fasting insulin levels. The study concluded there were significant associations between marijuana use and smaller waist circumferences.

CBD Promotes Cardiovascular Health

A 2013 study aimed to study how beneficial CBD is for the cardiovascular system, after showing positive effects in disorders ranging from diabetes and Huntington’s disease, to cancer and colitis. The paper showed CBD protects against vascular damage caused by a high glucose environment, inflammation, or the induction of type 2 diabetes in animal models. Cannabidiol also reduces the vascular hyperpermeability associated with such environments. In vivo tests showed CBD treatment protects against ischemia-reperfusion damage and against diabetes-associated cardiomyopathy. In a different model, CBD has been shown to reduce infarct size and increase blood flow in animal models.

CBD and Psoriasis

CBD oil is known to reduce the proliferation of keratinocytes (skin cells), which is extremely helpful for those suffering with psoriasis. It is well-known that CBD oil has potent anti-inflammatory benefits, which effectively fight the symptoms of psoriasis. Despite the fact that there are various treatments for psoriasis, CBD is one of the few that is non-toxic, so it is safer. CBD also offers UV-protection to improve skin health.

CBD as Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

According to researchers, CBD reduces pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, be it rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, gout or other types of inflammatory joint conditions. Doctors have successfully used Cannabidiol in the treatment of RA, with the subjects experiencing reductions in pain and inflammation. The subjects were administered CBD oil for a period of five weeks.
