CBD for Weight Loss: How Cannabidiol Helps You Lose Weight

Is good is CBD for weight loss? Does it work as an appetite suppressant? Does Cannabidiol boost metabolism? Can CBD help with fat browning? Does it improve energy levels? Find out how CBD works for weight loss and if Cannabidiol is a safe alternative for slimming down.

CBD has been touted as having an important role in regulating your body’s energy or calorie balance, but it has also been advertised as a way to manage the metabolism of fat and carbs.

While we know that cannabis does cause an increase in appetite (munchies), how does the non-psychoactive compound CBD influence the size of your waist? Is it a coincidence that the top 6 states in terms of health have undergone medical cannabis reform? Read our article and find out how to take CBD for weight loss.

What Is CBD?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid (compound) that can be found in plants from the cannabis family, including marijuana and hemp. CBD is the second best-known cannabinoid after the infamous THC, which is the compound responsible for causing a high and altering the mind when you use marijuana for recreational purposes. CBD and THC are most famous and most studied out of more than 100 cannabinoids in cannabis.

CBD is non-psychoactive, so it won’t mess with your senses, and it does come with many health benefits as it has many medical applications. While most people take CBD capsules in order to reduce anxiety, pain and depression, Cannabidiol has other uses as well. And the best thing about it? CBD is perfectly safe.

CBD has antipsychotic effects, fights certain cancers by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, relieves nausea and vomiting, and helps treat seizures and other neurological disorders. Cannabidiol also reduces the incidence of diabetes, improves cardiovascular health, protects the skin, can be useful in combating psoriasis, and works as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.

There’s evidence that CBD can relieve inflammation, reduces muscle and joint pain, soothes chronic pain, improves sleep quality, has antioxidant properties, enhances mood and increases energy levels.

How Does CBD Work?

Before learning how CBD works for weight loss, let’s see how CBD works in general. Inside your body, there’s a series of receptors that make up the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). That’s right, our bodies have an internal system that’s there specifically to mediate the effects of cannabinoids such as CBD and THC.

There are two main types of receptors found in the Endocannabinoid System: CB1, located mainly in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and CB2 receptors, which can mostly be found in the immune system. While these receptors are scattered around the body and found where different systems in the body intersect, CB1 and CB2 are the best-known and most studied.

Since the ECS is so widespread and far-reaching, it can influence things such as food cravings, appetite, pain, mood, memory, anxiety and other functions as well. The ultimate goal of CBD in the body is to promote homeostasis — an internal state of balance between all systems and functions.

But what about taking CBD for weight loss?

CBD Suppresses Appetite

While THC makes you to feel hungry, CBD has an opposite action. Since we know that CBD reduces anxiety and promotes relaxation, CBD can prevent emotional eating by improving your mood. Studies show CBD has anxiolytic effects and reduces anxiety in those suffering with social anxiety disorders (SAD).

In a study from 2012 that appeared in the scientific journal Psychopharmacology, cannabinoids have been shown to have appetite-suppressing properties. The cannabinoids in the test were CBD, CBN (Cannabinol) and CBG (Cannabigerol).

While CBN was the only one to increase feeding, CBG caused no changes in feeding, and CBD was found to curb appetite: “CBD reduced food intake in line with some existing reports, supporting the need for further mechanistic and behavioral work examining possible anti-obesity effects of Cannabidiol.”

CBD and Fat Loss

A study from 2016 that appeared in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry aimed to investigate the effects of CBD on preadipocytes, which are immature fat cells, in an attempt to fight obesity.

Cannabidiol was found to increase the number and activity of mitochondria, which is the powerhouse of cells, boosting the body’s ability to burn more calories. CBD was also shown to stimulate genes and proteins that improve the breakdown and oxidation of fats inside the body. In the study, Cannabidiol reduced the activity of proteins involved in generating new fat cells.

The results of this study showed that CBD is capable of inducing fat browning, which means it converts white adipose tissue that stores energy, to brown and beige adipose tissue that burns fat. This effect is also believed to improve glucose tolerance and less likely to develop diabetes and blood lipid diseases.

Your system also creates fat in an attempt to protect internal organs against toxins. So, the more toxins there are in your body, the harder it will be for you to burn fat. Therefore, whether it’s CBD from hemp or CBD from cannabis, this cannabinoid promotes weight loss thanks to its ability to eliminate toxins and remove the need for extra fat cells — all with no side effects.

CBD and Insulin Levels

We have previously explained that cannabinoids act on CB1 and CB2 receptors in our bodies. Some scientists believe that there is a strong connection between CB1 receptors located in the brain, central and peripheral nervous systems can influence hunger, appetite and energy intake.

A study from the American Journal of Medicine has demonstrated that the regular use of cannabis can trigger a 16% reduction in fasting insulin levels (measured before eating) — compared to non-users.

Why Are Pot Smokers Skinny?

While they may not be the poster-people for optimal health, stoners are skinny despite munching on things all the time. Why is this? Well, since cannabis is high in THC, it affects appetite, but also increases metabolism, effectively helping you to digest what you eat at a faster rate.

THC affects a hormone called ghrelin, which deals with hunger pangs, but also boosts and quickens metabolism and the breakdown of carbs, reducing the risk of calories to be converted and stored as fat in the body.

You might have noticed by now that those who consume pot regularly are skinnier. As we’ve explained previously, The American Journal of Medicine published a study in 2013 detailing how marijuana is associated with lower rates of obesity, but also lower levels of insulin resistance and fasting insulin.

The same study showed that cannabis users experienced insulin resistance levels 17% lower compared to non-users, but also helped in improving insulin control, preventing hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

The study also found that marijuana use is associated with smaller waist circumference. As a result, CBD for weight loss should be even better, as it brings only the benefits and not the side effects of THC.

How Safe Is CBD for Weight Loss?

A review from 2011 evaluated the safety and side effects of CBD. It concluded that CBD is well tolerated in humans and does not interfere with heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and does not affect GI transit.

However, those taking liver disease medications should stay away from Cannabidiol, as it can interfere with hepatic drug metabolism. Also, people suffering with Parkinson’s may experience a worsening of muscle movement and resting tremor.

When people smoke marijuana for recreational purposes (to get high), the CBD in weed actually knock off THC off of cannabinoid receptors, preventing its side effects. It is especially effective if a strain is high in CBD and low in THC.

CBD Oil for Weight Loss

Now you know more about the weight loss effects of CBD and how it works to help you achieve a slimmer body. However, be aware that consuming large quantities of CBD can cause you to gain weight due to its effects on the Endocannabinoid System. When you choose a CBD supplement, make sure to keep an eye out on the dosage so that you won’t gain any unwanted pounds.

CBD Capsules for Weight Loss

CBD capsules are better for weight loss because they contain a pre-measured dose of CBD so you won’t make any measuring errors. Due to the delivery method, taking CBD oil can cause you do exceed the quantity (drops) recommended by the manufacturer. With CBD pills, you won’t go through this hassle, and you only need to pop one in and that’s that. Thus, CBD capsules are not only easier to take, but also safer, as they reduce the risk for errors.

Bottom Line: How Effective Is CBD for Weight Loss?

Using CBD for weight loss can be effective as Cannabidiol is an appetite suppressant that can stop you from resorting to coping mechanisms such as binge eating, or emotional eating. This is because CBD fights anxiety and reduces stress, so the next time you’ll feel under the weather, you won’t find comfort in junk food.

CBD can also boost metabolism and help you achieve a caloric deficit that forces the body to burn stored fats. Taking CBD for weight loss might also work because it prevents the formation of future fat cells and can induce fat browning — the process through which white fatty tissue is converted into brown and beige fatty tissue, then burned.

CBD weight loss products may be useful in fighting issues related to obesity and appear to be highly capable in helping you shed some unwanted pounds.
