Depression can be caused by a large number of lifestyle factors. One of these lifestyle factors is food, but people tend to overlook it. According to Shawn Talbott, PhD, a nutritional biochemist, what we eat could have a huge role in depression.

We tend to eat salty and fatty foods when we are feeling upset. In order to fight depression, eating better foods such as lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables we would be feeling the need to eat junk food and we would have higher energy levels. Here is a list of food that may be able to help you avoid depression.


Walnuts are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which has been proven by many studies to support brain function and reduce depression symptoms. At the same time, walnuts are also rich in healthy monounsaturated fats which are good for the heart and proteins which make them the ideal snack.

Fatty Fish

The best source of omega-3 fatty acids which you can find are fatty fish such as mackerel, bluefish, wild salmon, and tuna. All these fish contain fatty acids which can help you boost your brain power and your overall health at the same time. They can help improve circulation, reduce inflammation and the risk of developing a heart disease. Try to eat fish at least twice a week.

Dark Leafy Greens

Dark leafy greens are full of nutrients and other good stuff for the body. Some consider dark leafy greens to be the foods with the most powerful immune boosting effect that can also prevent cancer.

Besides cancer, these foods can help with various types of inflammation. They contain high amounts of vitamin A, C, E and K, minerals and phytochemicals, all of which are excellent for the body.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are full of healthy, high-fiber carbohydrates which can boost your health and your morale at the same time.
